Tornadoes Rip Arkansas Third Time this Year

It happened first in February when people were killed by tornadoes in the Arkansas.  April brought another tornado attack but luckily no deaths that time, and now again on May 2nd, where 7 people were killed.  Three out of the last four months have seen tornado outbreaks in Arkansas.

The same powerful system that tornadoes across several states I wrote about yesterday, and then the high wind and tornado event that night in Kansas City, continued to dish out the deadly weather across the country on Friday.

The tornadoes started early in the morning just before dawn in Arkansas, and continued into the afternoon, with 3 significant tornadoes, rated as high as F3 in Conway, Van Buren and Cleburne counties.  Damage surveys are still underway in the other tornadoes.

By early afternoon, the low pressure system was in SE Iowa with a trailing cold front southward across Missouri, western Arkansas, and down into east Texas.  Ahead of the front, things were very unstable with CAPE values over 2000 and very moist air,  severe storms had no trouble getting fired up.  Helicity values over 200 m2/s2 insured they would rotate nicely.

The NWS: Little Rock preliminary damage survey can be found here.

Severe weather looks again to be in the forecast for the southern plains beginning possibly on Monday. Check back to my blog soon as I will begin looking at a forecast for this upcoming event as I expect to be chasing as many as 3 consecutive days this coming week.
