Sitting south of Sweetwater on hwy 70, decided not to be tempted by the first supercell of the day……..only time will tell if that was a good decision. Hopefully something will erupt along the dryline to verify our decision. Currently considering going after the storm over Big Spring.

PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION
As of 1:20pm today the Storm Prediction Center has issued a PDS tornado watch for the I20 corridor and areas south including the metropolitan areas of San Angelo, Big Spring, Sweetwater, Brownwood, as well as many others. This watch stresses the dire need for attention from people living in the areas to keep abreast to the situation. Destructive tornadoes are EXPECTED and long tracked cyclical supercells with multiple tornadoes are not out of the question.
We are currently headed south towards Snyder with the anticipation of locating the triple point and staying as close as possible to that since tornadoes, today, are most likely in the vicinity of the warm front.
We are already running the LIVE ChaseCAM so stay tuned for developing weather. One side note: we are currently north of the warm front which is why we are in fog.

POTENTIAL TORNADO OUTBREAK IN TEXAS TODAY
As I sit here and look over the current and short term forecast data, I can’t help but wonder in the back of my mind if this is going to be one of those days that goes down in the history books, makes the news, and communities get destroyed… or will it end up not verifying like several days already this month.
If things come together as expected, and as of this writing they appear to be doing just that, the potential for a significant tornado outbreak across the central and north-central part of Texas exists later this afternoon through well in to the night, along with some seriously damaging straight line winds and giant hail.
The greatest threat for this will be along and near a warm front that is currently drifting north and is currently just south of I20, and east of the dryline, which intersects the front currently near Midland. That’s where the triple point is. Having read some area forecast discussions, there seems to be differing opinions on exactly where that crucial triple point will end up by afternoon initiation. Some feel more in the Lubbock area, while others feel more south and east. I happen to be in the latter group, and feel like it will be in the Snyder, TX area.
Thus, that is where we are headed, my chase partner Graham and I. He’ll be going today so we should get more frequent updates to the blog. That’s just near impossible to do once things get going and I am riding solo.
I expect this event will go WELL into the night, and the attendant threat for tornadic supercells will last that long as well, although they may be embedded in a mess. Terrible for chasing, especially at night.
Click on the graphic above to see the bigger picture, and if your in that red shaded area, please pay close attention to your local information sources today. Should things continue to evolve as currently forecast, I would not be surprised to see a narrow high risk area by the Storm Prediction Center on the afternoon update as the position of the front becomes more clear.
The one big concern I had was massive cloud cover over most of the potential area in Texas. At this time, those concerns are being alleviated as clearing has begun south of the front near the current triple point.
